Preschool Early Dismissal: Full day preschoolers will dismiss Thursday, February 7th and Friday, February 8th at 11:30 for Parent-Teacher Conferences. After school care will be provided. The charge for after care on those days will be $2.00 an hour. Hot lunch can be ordered for those students attending after school care.
K-8 No School: There will be no school on Tuesday, February 12th for students in kindergarten thru 8th grade. The grade school teachers will be attending the Midwest Educational Technology Conference. Preschool will have school as usual. Full-day preschoolers will need to bring a sack lunch. Hot lunch will not be available.
K-8 Spring Pictures: This Tuesday, February 5th is Spring Picture Day for Kindergarten thru 8th grade. All students will be photographed. Students may wear to school what you would like them to be photographed in. You will have the option to buy portraits or return them to the school office at no charge. Fliers have been sent home. Please return the flier with your pose and background choice. Zion Lutheran School receives a profit from pictures purchased. The profit is used for non-budged items for the school.
Zion Lutheran School Open House and Soup Luncheon for Prospective New Families and Students, Sunday, February 10, 11:30-1:00.

Please come and enjoy a delicious bowl of soup, take a tour, and visit with our amazing Kindergarten – Eighth Grade teachers and see why Zion Lutheran School might be a great place for your child to continue their formal Christian education. Future Kindergarten Open House: We apologize for cancelling the Kindergarten Open House, but due to the weather conditions, we thought it best to reschedule. Information will be emailed soon with the reschedule date. We are having an Open House/Soup Luncheon for Prospective Families on Sunday, February 10th from 11:30 to 1:30 and would love for you to join us. Our kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Holly Rupprecht, will be available at the February 10th open house. Watch for details to come soon regarding the Kindergarten Preview Open House date!
Roma’s Pizza Day: Student Council Proudly Presents Roma’s Day, Friday, February 15th. For $6.00 your student will receive a mini pizza, drink and a dessert. Pizza choices are sausage, cheese, and pepperoni. Orders are due by Tuesday, February 12th (No late orders will be accepted). Order form attached to this email and also coming home in your child’s weekly communicator. If you do not order a Roma’s Pizza lunch, please bring a sack lunch – There is no hot lunch on this day!
Future Preschoolers – Dr. Seuss Night! Tuesday, February 26th 6-7pm. Do you know someone with a child ready for preschool? Tell them about our upcoming Dr. Seuss Night! There will be fun activities based on the books by Dr. Seuss. Parents will have the opportunity to see the preschool classrooms and meet the teachers. This evening is for children who will attend preschool next school year.
Kindergarten Registration: Kindergarten registration will take place on Tuesday, February 26 from 8am to 3pm. Registration will be in the school office. You must bring your child’s birth certificate to registration. In order to register for the fall kindergarten class, your child must be 5 years old on or before September 1, 2019. You and your child may visit the kindergarten classroom from 8am to 11am on registration day. Watch for information to come home with your 4-year old preschooler soon.
Congratulations! On Saturday, January 26, two students from fifth grade were able to participate in the Academic Fair at Lutheran High School North in St. Louis, MO. The Academic Fair is held every year at North and includes a spelling bee, math competition, Bible facts competition, this year a Science Fair was scheduled and also includes musical solos and small ensembles. Grade schools from around the area are invited to participate and come to North.
Grant Downing and Lucas Lorenz were able to participate. Grant played an alto saxophone solo and Lucas played a trumpet solo. Both students did very well. They both earned a blue ribbon, I Rating, Superior, which is the highest rating. Congratulations!
Geography Bee: Zion held its Geography Bee on Tuesday. Five participants from grades four through eight were represented in the Final Round: Kenedi Davidson, Patrick Hale, Taylor Weber, Ethan Bruhn, and Marcus Gerling. After three rounds of some challenging questions the field was narrowed to two contestants for the Championship Round: Patrick and Ethan. After answering all three Championship questions without a winner, the Geobee went to the Tiebreaker Round. This round required seven very difficult questions before Ethan became the Zion 2019 GeoBee Champion and Patrick the Runner-up. Congratulations! We will find out in March if Ethan qualifies for the state GeoBee.
Auction Meeting: The next auction meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 12th at 6:30 in the teacher workroom. If you cannot make it and are still willing to help, please contact Erin Frankford at 401-1589 or Tommi Thein at 781-8329.
Building Blocks Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to families who struggle with the cost of Lutheran elementary school tuition (K-8th Grade only). Applications for financial assistance for the upcoming 2019-2020 school year for kindergarten thru 8th grade must be completed online between January 1, 2019 and April 1, 2019. Applications will be reviewed by the LESA Awards Committee, and schools will be notified of awards for their students on
May 31, 2019. Visit the LESA website at www.lesastl.org and select the Scholarships tab. Read the information pertaining to the Building Block’s application process, deadlines and funding; then go to https://online.factsmgt.
(Please note: Zion Lutheran School will use the information submitted in your FACTS application for financial assistance thru the school so you will only need to apply one time to be considered for both Building Blocks and other Zion Financial Assistance.)
Lunch Program: The School Board is presently studying our school lunch program. We are looking at the feasibility of an alternative lunch program that would provide good, nutritious meals for the students at a more reasonable price. As we begin to explore this project, we have realized that we need more help. If you are interested in participating in this project, please call or text Angie Liefer at (618) 570-9958 or email at firstname.lastname@example.org. We would like input from parents and family members involved in our students’ lives, the time commitment is minimal. Many hands make light work.

Chapel Offerings: Our third quarter offerings will be given to the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod World Relief and Human care to help our fellow LCMS members suffering from the effects of the California wildfires. So far our offerings total $116.56.
